No "A" for Effort

Here is a sad story that makes me wonder about the future of our nation. It seems college students have a heightened sense of entitlement to better grades just because they put a lot of effort in a project, paper, or test.

"In line with Dean Hogge’s observation are Professor Greenberger’s test results. Nearly two-thirds of the students surveyed said that if they explained to a professor that they were trying hard, that should be taken into account in their grade.

Jason Greenwood, a senior kinesiology major at the University of Maryland echoed that view.

“I think putting in a lot of effort should merit a high grade,” Mr. Greenwood said. “What else is there really than the effort that you put in?”
Well, for Mr. Greenwood, the "what else is there" would be results. Comprehension in reading, not just letting your eyes hit every page. Articulate integration of class material, not just regurgitation of lecture notes. Active participation and interaction in class, not just attendance. There's a lot more than just effort.

Not to mix politics and education, but I'm sure no one would agree to give President Bush an "A" on his administration just because he tried hard and did his best. Results (and consequences) matter. Bush's Administration will be judged on these items by history, which I think will be much more positive than now. And for all of Obama's effort, he may not be judged so easily if he actually produces no results as well. Why would anyone think school should be different than real life?
